Pat Starnes Snippets: Economic Stimulus Check: Use it or Lose it

Economic Stimulus Check: Use it or Lose it

Have you filed your 2007 tax return? Well, call me the procrastinator. I beat the October 15 deadline for filing my Federal tax return by a full seven days. Woo hoo! As I left the accountant's office, I assured her that THIS year will be different. Unfortunately, she knows me well enough by now that she is taking a "I'll believe it when I see it" attitude.

This blog is to remind everyone about the economic stimulus package which passed earlier this year. In order to receive a check, your tax return must be filed by October 15. An news article appeared in this weekend's business section reminding those who don't normally file a return (eligible seniors and veterans) that they MUST FILE to receive the stimulus check. A taxpayer must have earned at least $3,000 in 2007, and social security benefits can be applied to the threshold. Those who file a tax extension should also be reminded about the deadline. According to the IRS, over 6,000 recipients in the Jackson Metro area have not submitted their tax return, and will forfeit the money if a return is not filed by the October 15 deadline. On the national level, the number of taxpayers not filing is staggering.

Take a moment to insure those who routinely file tax extensions, or an elderly parent, is aware of this deadline and takes immediate action to file a 2007 return.

70,000 Louisiana people did not file. That leaves more for the tax payers. This always happens as people or too dumb or do not want to be known by the IRS. The same holds true for the earned income tax credit which is much more.

I just sent my taxes in today but did not qualify for the helicopter drop. Did it work?

I don't know whether I'll get anything back or not. My accountant said it would probably be applied to NEXT year's return.
